If you are looking tired and a bit aged, or beyond your years, then eyelid surgery (or blepharoplasty as it is medically known) may provide the youthful and refreshed appearance that eludes you.

There are two types of blepharoplasty: upper and lower — depending on the eyelid being treated.

They are both the result of time and affect people to varying degrees depending on their hereditary predisposition.

Upper

Upper blepharoplasty addresses excess, sagging skin which can lead to a droopiness called hooding. In some instances, the upper eyelids may sag so much they become an obstruction and begin to interfere with eyesight. In these cases, upper blepharoplasty may be covered in part or entirely by health insurance.

And Lower

The most common lower eyelid issue is bulging, commonly referred to as under-eye bags. But lower eyelid surgery is also used to remove excess skin as a powerful way to smooth the skin. For further smoothing and tightening of the skin, it is also often combined with a chemical peel, laser skin resurfacing, or Botox to treat fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage. And sometimes the previously mentioned non-surgical procedures are performed instead of surgery.

Finally surgery in this area can be used to treat a hollowness between the cheek and lower lid, also known as a nasojugal groove, or tear trough deformity.

Lower blepharoplasty is not usually covered by insurance.
