Facelift in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills

As much as everyone wants to have a fresh and youthful face, loss of skin elasticity is just a plain fact of aging. Loosening skin is caused by a combination of changing facial fat and the natural deterioration of rejuvenating skin agents like collagen. It happens more quickly to some people than others, but it hits everyone eventually, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and even jowls. Eventually, it can lead to a face that you barely recognize as your own.

The facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a surgery that can correct these problems. By eliminating excess fat, tightening the muscles beneath, and redraping the skin on top, a facelift can restore a smooth, youthful appearance to your face.

Ideal Facelift Candidate

Rhytidectomy can be a good option for men and women of any age who would like to improve the appearance of loose facial skin or jowling, although the majority of patients are in their forties to their sixties. While the best results are achieved with patients whose skin retains some amount of elasticity, some improvement can be expected in most situations. Ideal candidates will be in good health and have reasonable expectations for a realistic outcome from the surgery.

Facelift Consultation

newport beach faceliftBefore you schedule your surgery, you’ll need to have a thorough consultation with Dr. Batniji at one of his offices either in Newport Beach or Beverly Hills, California. After you discuss your concerns and goals for your face, he’ll perform a detailed examination of your face, looking for important factors like the underlying structures and the elasticity of your skin. As one of the leading facelift specialists in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills, Southern California, Dr. Batniji will be able to select the appropriate technique for your individual situation in order to provide you with beautiful, long-lasting results. He’ll discuss the necessary techniques with you to be sure that you understand each step of the process before you move on to other details like scheduling and payment. You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss other procedures, like blepharoplasty and injectable fillers, that are commonly combined with a facelift.

Facelift Procedure

After Dr. Batniji meets with you one last time to review the procedure and make the necessary surgical markings on your face, you’ll be anesthetized with either a general anesthetic or a local anesthetic with intravenous sedation. Once you’re completely unconscious, the surgery will begin with the incisions.

In most cases, the incisions will be made around the hairline and behind the ears. Once the incisions are made, Dr. Batniji will use sutures to tighten and contour the underlying muscle. He’ll remove any excess fat, then carefully redrape the skin so that it lies smoothly over the new contours of your face. Once everything is in place, he’ll trim off any excess skin and close the incisions. Finally, he’ll place the necessary dressings on your face, and you’ll be sent off to recovery.

Facelift Recovery

The facelift is normally an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to recover in your own home after just a short period of monitoring in the recovery room. You can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the weeks immediately after your facelift. Normally, these peak 36-48 hours after surgery and then gradually subside for 2-3 weeks. You’ll need to keep your head elevated at all times, including at night, for the first weeks to minimize swelling. Your bandages will remain in place for 5-7 days, and you may wish to wear a supportive garment at night after that. In most cases, patients feel well enough to return to normal activities within 10-14 days, but strenuous activities like working out should be avoided for about 6 weeks.

Potential Complications

Like any other surgery, rhytidectomy does carry a slight risk of blood clots, infection, and poor reactions to anesthesia. More specific risks include numbness around the incision sites, hair loss at the incision sites, damage to underlying structures, and simple dissatisfaction with the results.

FAQs

How long will the results of my facelift last?

The removal of excess skin is permanent, and the recontouring of the underlying muscle often lasts for 10-15 years or more. It’s important to remember, though, that you will age normally following the procedure, so try to think of the surgery as more akin to turning back a clock than stopping the clock completely.

How noticeable will the scars be?

As a top facelift specialist, Dr. Batniji is quite skilled at hiding the incisions inside the hairline and in the natural creases around the ears. You can help the scars be even less noticeable by taking normal precautions like avoiding unprotected sun exposure, which can darken them. In most cases, facelift scars heal quite flat and close to skin color, so most people find them nearly invisible.

Where will my surgery take place?

Dr. Batniji is affiliated with several accredited surgery centers and hospitals throughout Southern California, but most of his surgeries are performed at either the Newport Beach Surgery Center or the Hoag Memorial Presbyterian Hospital.

Are there any ways to get the same results without surgery?

Nonsurgical methods like laser skin tightening and injectable fillers can help to rejuvenate your skin slightly if you’re only facing the initial signs of aging, but there are no noninvasive methods to contour the underlying structures and remove the extra skin that is causing sagging and looseness.

Can I have any other procedures done at the same time?

Yes. The most common procedures to be combined with a facelift include blepharoplasty (or eyelid surgery), rhinoplasty (or nose surgery), neck lifts, chin augmentation, or injectable fillers to add volume.
