Rhinoplasty

Impact of thick skin on African American nose job

HomeRhinoplasty I’ve heard that the thickness of the skin is a greater factor in ethnic rhinoplasties. Why is this? Thick nasal skin makes refinement of the nasal tip challenging because the thick skin hides the underlying nasal tip cartilages. Therefore, we use a variety of techniques to achieve nasal tip refinement in the ethnic rhinoplasty patient. The first maneuver is to re-shape your nasal tip cartilages to refine the appearance. This includes trimming some excess cartilage and using stitches to re-shape the cartilage. If more refinement is still needed, we can use cartilage from your nasal septum to achieve further refinement […]

Deciding between closed and open rhinoplasty

HomeRhinoplasty When it comes to deciding between a closed and open rhinoplasty, how much of that decision is the patient’s vs. the doctor’s? The decision is a combination of dialogue between patient and doctor. First, the patient expresses his or her desires for rhinoplasty. Then, the doctor evaluates the nasal anatomy and determines the best approach to perform the maneuvers needed to achieve the desired result. Some surgeons may only use the closed, or endonasal approach and some surgeons may only use the open, or external, approach. I use both approaches and the factors I take into consideration when deciding which […]

What ethnicities do you have experience in performing rhinoplasty in?

HomeRhinoplasty What ethnicities do you have experience in performing rhinoplasty in? We have experience in performing a wide variety of ethnic rhinoplasty, including Middle Eastern, Persian/Iranian, and Asian rhinoplasty. When performing ethnic rhinoplasty, we take into consideration a variety of factors. One factor is anatomy specific to that ethnic group. For example, some ethnic groups tend to have thick nasal skin and weak cartilage; cartilage grafting helps address both these issues. Another factor to consider is aesthetic goals. Asian patients tend to desire augmentation of the bridge of the nose, while Middle Eastern patients wish for refinement of a bump along […]

Are there any reasons not to have closed rhinoplasty?

HomeRhinoplasty I know everyone says that the incision on the columella for open rhinoplasty is barely noticeable, but I’d rather not even chance that and just have closed rhinoplasty. Are there any reasons not to have closed rhinoplasty? The decision to perform an open (also known as external) rhinoplasty or a closed (also known as endonasal) rhinoplasty depends upon a variety of factors. One factor to consider is your goals for rhinoplasty. If you wish to address a bump along the bridge of the nose only, then a closed approach would be my preferred approach. If you wish to achieve tip […]

Would you be able to remove the silicone implant in my nose?

HomeRhinoplasty I have a silicone implant in my nose from a previous nose job. Would you be able to remove it and sculpt my nose in a new way? Yes, we can remove a silicone implant and achieve refinement using your own cartilage. The source of your own cartilage may include the nasal septum, ear cartilage, or rib cartilage. […]

When to have a tip rhinoplasty

HomeRhinoplasty I’ve read of certain rhinoplasties referred to as “tip rhinoplasty”. I’m in Newport Beach and have never had plastic surgery. All I want done for my nose job is to have my tip fixed because it’s too bulbous. Is this tip rhinoplasty? Is this less extensive than a full nose job surgery? You are correct. A tip rhinoplasty focuses specifically on the nasal tip. If your sole desire is to address the bulbous nasal tip, then you may benefit from a tip rhinoplasty to refine the nasal tip. […]

How are grafts secured during a nose job?

HomeRhinoplasty When using grafts for a nose job, how are they secured so that they don’t move around? I use your own cartilage when creating grafts during rhinoplasty. I secure these grafts with stitches. […]

Is open rhinoplasty used for certain types of patients?

HomeRhinoplasty What is open rhinoplasty? Is this procedure used to treat a specific type of patient? There are 2 approaches to rhinoplasty…open and closed. The difference between the two is a small, well concealed incision in the skin of the nose between the nostrils; this incision is utilized with the open approach. Although this incision is very small and extremely well hidden, the exposure obtained with the open approach provides us the opportunity to precisely modify the cartilages of the nasal tip to achieve a refined, natural appearance. As well, we typically use cartilage grafts to maintain the nasal airway patency […]

Healing after a nose job with local anesthesia

HomeRhinoplasty After my rhinoplasty, how long do I need to wear that metal cover? Will I be able to drive home after the surgery? I am planning on having local anesthesia. The bandage along the bridge of the nose remains in place for one week; I remove it one week after surgery. I do not recommend you drive yourself to and from the surgery center. You will need someone to drive you. Although some rhinoplasty procedures may be performed under local anesthesia, the great majority of rhinoplasty surgeries I perform are with general anesthesia. […]
