Is ethnic rhinoplasty more complex than other rhinoplasty?

HomeRhinoplasty Is ethnic rhinoplasty considered more complex than other rhinoplasty? Rhinoplasty is a complex surgery. When performing an ethnic rhinoplasty, it is important for me to take into consideration the unique characteristics of the patient’s ethnicity as well as their desires. These unique characteristics include skin type, facial features, bone and cartilage structure of the nose, among other characteristics. Typically, patients desire a result that is in harmony with their facial features and in the context of their ethnicity. Digital imaging during the consultation further aids us in the discussion of what the patient desires are and what limitations exist within […]

Subtle or drastic improvements in rhinoplasty

HomeRhinoplasty I’m half Egyptian and I have a very big beak for a nose. If I were to have a rhinoplasty, do you suggest improving it just a little or drastically changing it? It depends upon your gender and other facial features. Generally, males should have a stronger bridge of the nose, while women tend to prefer a more elegant, graceful profile. That said, you may wish to maintain your ethnicity in which case it is best to preserve some of the bridge so that it is in harmony with the remainder of your features. We perform digital imaging of your […]

How do you fix fat nostrils?

HomeRhinoplasty I have what I think of as fat nostrils. Maybe this is because I’m Middle Eastern. How do you fix this with nose surgery? During rhinoplasty, we can perform nostril narrowing procedures. Well-designed incisions placed in specific areas can address a wide or fat nostril to narrow the nostril. For example, a flared nostril is narrowed by trimming excess nostril through an incision placed near or in the crease between the nostril and face. I have a low nasal bridge, how do you fix it?

HomeRhinoplasty I have a low nasal bridge. I’m Asian. Would this require breaking the nose to fix it? Not necessarily. A low nasal bridge can be augmented with a variety of techniques. One technique is non-surgical and involves injectable filler, such as hyaluronic acid (Juvederm) or calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse). A longer lasting procedure is surgical (rhinoplasty) and involves placement of cartilage and/or fascia to augment the dorsum. That cartilage is obtained from either the ear, the septum or the rib. The fascia that is obtained is temporalis fascia. For before and after photos of Dr. Batniji’s Newport Beach rhinoplasty procedure, click […]

How is a Jewish nose job different?

HomeRhinoplasty I’ve read where rhinoplasty is different for patients of different ethnicities. How is this so for Jewish people? A Jewish nose may have a hump along the bridge. This hump is usually bony and cartilaginous in nature. Refinement of the bridge of the nose by trimming down the bony and cartilaginous hump may be of benefit. With respect to ethnic rhinoplasty, I shave the hump along the bridge of the nose without over-resecting it and/or giving an “overdone” look, thus maintaining your ethnicity. […]

The tip of my nose is bulbous after my African American rhinoplasty

HomeRhinoplasty I’m African American and I had a nose job 3 years ago to narrow my tip and make my nostrils less flared. I initially like my results but now I feel like the tip has become bulbous. What would make this happen after so many years and what can be done to fix it? One potential cause for bulbous appearance of the nose is the development of scar tissue at the nasal tip. This does not occur right away, but rather may develop over time. Sometimes injection of steroid may be of benefit. You may wish to consider consulting with […]

Drooping nose after my ethnic rhinoplasty

HomeRhinoplasty I’m a little over two weeks post op from ethnic rhinoplasty to increase definition in my tip and reduce the alar base. I know it’s early, but my tip now droops. Does this mean that I’ll need a revision procedure? Not necessarily. It is early in the healing process after rhinoplasty. You may wish to discuss this concern with your original surgeon. There may be increased swelling at the nasal tip which will resolve with time. As well, taping of the nose may be of benefit during this period to facilitate the healing process. In my experience, I use a […]

Asymmetry following a rhinoplasty

HomeRhinoplasty I’m Hispanic. I had a nose job 7 weeks ago. One side of my nose is much thicker than the other making it look very uneven. I’ve been told that Hispanics have very thick skin. Is this to blame or is it swelling? What are the chances that the symmetry will improve? I recommend you consult with your original surgeon. Since you had surgery 7 weeks ago, you still have swelling of the tissues. Swelling may be asymmetric. As the swelling resolves, the asymmetry may resolve. There are several options to help minimize the swelling, such as injection of steorid […]

Ethnic rhinoplasty specialist

HomeRhinoplasty Is ethnic rhinoplasty a specialty like revision rhinoplasty is? In ethnic rhinoplasty, the patient and the surgeon discuss the patient’s desires in the context of their ethnicity. Sometimes, ethnic and revision rhinoplasty blend together. For example, a Middle Eastern patient may have had rhinoplasty performed in the past with resultant nasal obstruction and an “overdone” appearance…scooped out bridge and over-turned nasal tip with sharp edges to the nasal tip. This type of patient typically requests a revision procedure to achieve a nose that works (improve nasal obstruction) and achieve a more natural result that is in harmony with the ethnicity. […]

What should I look for in a surgeon?

HomeRhinoplasty I have a Jewish nose and am searching for a surgeon to correct the trademark bump in my profile. What should I look for in a surgeon? You should look for a surgeon who performs rhinoplasty (surgery of the nose) on a regular basis. This surgeon should also appreciate the function of the nose and address any potential sources for nasal obstruction, such as enlarged turbinates, deviated nasal septum, and/or internal nasal valve stenosis. Board certification in Otolaryngology, Facial Plastic Surgery, and/or Plastic Surgery is important. Finally, you should feel a connection with the surgeon that demonstrates an understanding between […]
