Ethnic rhinoplasty limitations include the inherent strength and resilience of the nasal cartilages, the thickness of the nasal skin, and the healing process of the individual. Another consideration is the harmonious balance between the nose and the facial features. In ethnic rhinoplasty, we like to have as a goal a result that “fits the face” and is in harmony with other facial features, such as cheek bones, lips, mouth, eyes, and chin.

Background: Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) and silicone are safe and relatively biocompatible materials.
Objective: To compare, using multiple histologic parameters, the tissue response to a standard silicone soft tissue implant with the response to a modified ePTFE implant. How does skin thickness effect rhinoplasty on Asian patients?
Asian patients typically have very thick skin at the nasal tip. As such, refinement of the nasal tip is a challenge. Also, swelling after surgery may last longer in thicker skinned patients as compared with thinner skinned patients. Some methods to achieve nasal tip refinement in thick skinned patients include suturing techniques and cartilage grafts to the nasal tip.
