How Microneedling Is Performed
Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves poking microchannels into the skin using a specialized needling pen. This generates localized inflammation and stimulates the skin’s natural healing process. The treatment encourages the enhanced production of collagen, elastin, and capillaries, and because of this, microneedling is sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy or skin needling.
There is little to no discomfort associated with the procedure, as the skin is properly numbed with a strong topical numbing agent. This treatment is sometimes done with either hyaluronic acid or platelet-rich plasma, which is needled directly into the top layer of skin. It travels through the microchannels into the deeper skin tissues.
At Batniji Facial Plastic Surgery, we also offer Sylfirm RF (radiofrequency) microneedling. RF microneedling involves use of radiofrequency energy to further tighten the skin. This is a safe treatment for those with darker skin complexions. It’s a stellar alternative to the fractionated CO2 laser, which potentially puts those with darker skin at risk of pigmentation.
Even with the best equipment in the industry, optimal results require know-how, patience, and a meticulous hand. Dr. Batniji knows his way around state-of-the-art technology, and the real results come from his years of hands-on experience and numerous successful procedures.
The Benefits of Microneedling
Microneedling is a great option for improving the appearance of large pores, stretch marks, lax skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. It's also one of the best methods for tackling acne scars, a common skin issue that many people all over the world suffer from.
Microneedling is one of the few treatments that can improve the appearance of undereye wrinkles, those pesky fine lines and wrinkles under the eyes—one of the most challenging areas to target due to its close proximity to the eye.
By kickstarting the healing process, this treatment boosts collagen and elastin production. This gives your skin its healthy glow back and leaves it feeling plump and tight. It’s an excellent choice for people from all walks of life and varying age groups.
Lastly, microneedling is great for those who want to keep their anti-aging treatments as natural as possible. It is an entirely mechanical collagen-inducing therapy, and nothing artificial is injected into the skin. Put simply, this treatment encourages your skin to create the ingredients it needs to do all the repair work by itself. A series of treatments is recommended for the best outcome.
Issues That Can Be Treated with Microneedling
Microneedling can target several issues on the face, such as:
- Age spots/sunspots
- Scars resulting from acne
- Other facial scars
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Undereye bags
- Large pores
- Reduced skin elasticity
- Uneven skin tone
Apart from addressing these facial issues, microneedling can be effective in treating stretch marks found in other regions of the body. For example, if you have stretch marks on your abdominal region or your thighs, a microneedling treatment can be effective.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?
If you’re looking to treat issues with hyperpigmentation, scars, or wrinkles, you may be an excellent candidate for microneedling. Anyone looking to enhance their appearance naturally is a stellar candidate for microneedling treatments.
Microneedling can cause minor bleeding, so people who suffer from clotting disorders may want to consider this beforehand. Skin issues such as eczema may cause microneedling complications, depending on the severity of the condition. It’s crucial to note that those experiencing a skin infection will need to let it heal before undergoing microneedling in order to avoid additional health concerns.
During your consultation, Dr. Batniji will determine whether microneedling is right for you. If you happen to have any concerns about your health, please share any details you think might be relevant to the treatment. Your health is our top priority.
Your Microneedling Consultation
Before undergoing a microneedling treatment, you’ll consult with Dr. Batniji to determine whether or not you’re a suitable candidate. Dr. Batniji will ask you about your complete medical history and current health status. You should be completely honest in order to avoid unwanted complications and determine your eligibility for the treatment.
Typically, people with the following conditions should not undergo microneedling treatments:
- Active acne
- An active skin infection
- Keloid scarring
During your consultation with Dr. Batniji, you can ask any questions you may have. You can also ask about RF microneedling and about microneedling with PRP as treatment options.
Regardless of your specific procedure, you’ll be treated with unwavering care through every step of the process. We'll make sure you’re fully educated on what to expect and that you feel heard and understood on a personal level.
While most medications won’t interfere with the microneedling treatment, you may be asked to refrain from using topical retinoids and taking ibuprofen before your session.
Microneedling Aftercare
Because microneedling is only minimally invasive, only minimal recovery time is required to get back to your normal self. Everyone’s individual recovery experience may vary, but most patients have a similar recovery process.
It’s common to experience minor swelling or bruising after microneedling in Beverly Hills. Thankfully, these symptoms will subside within days. There are other minor symptoms that you may experience, such as an itching or sensitive sensation, but they generally fade a few hours after your procedure.
The average amount of downtime after microneedling with PRP is about three days, during which you may experience redness, mild swelling, and pinpoint bruising. You may also notice light sloughing of the skin in the days to follow as old skin cells begin to turn over, exposing the fresh, new skin below.
We give all Sylfirm RF microneedling patients a post-treatment kit containing our custom products. Though we can’t make general recommendations for skin care based on the procedures because it is very patient-dependent, all patients will receive analysis and individualized skin care recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Microneedling FAQs
In traditional microneedling, several microneedles are inserted into the skin tissues at various depths. These encourage the skin's natural healing process.
With RF microneedling, after these microneedles are inserted, they will emit waves of radiofrequency energy. This encourages further collagen production, along with contraction of existing collagen and elastin protein fibers.
Superficial skin issues may require one to two microneedling treatment sessions, whereas deeper issues can require three to six sessions. It's best to space each session out, taking around four to six weeks between sessions to let the skin heal and create new collagen protein at an advanced rate.
The amount of time that microneedling results will last varies based on the patient's skin type and the severity of the skin conditions that were treated. Generally, results last from six months to a full year, and RF microneedling results can last up to eighteen months.
