HomeGeneral Over the past year I have had a few injections of Juvederm. The results have always been good until the last injection. I now have small lumps under the skin that are visible. What can I do about this? Will it clear up and when?
Juvederm is made of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a biological product with its origins from substances found in our body. It is not a permanent filler. I use Juvederm to fill fine lines and wrinkles throughout the facial area as well as add volume to certain areas, such as in lip augmentation or non-surgical […]
HomeGeneral Do I need a physical examination with my primary care physician prior to plastic surgery?
Plastic surgeons will be prohibited from performing elective cosmetic surgery procedures on patients who have not undergone a proper physical examination up to 30 days prior to the procedure under a law (AB 2968) that took effect on January 1, 2010. This is a law in the state of California and has been referred to as the Donda West Law, after Kanye West’s mother.
The law also requires written clearance from a physician, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant certifying that a patient is able to undergo […]
The Younger You Look, the Longer You’ll Live?
New research by Danish scientists suggests that chances are, the younger you look, the longer you’ll live. A team of researchers from the University of Southern Denmark studied photographs of 1,826 Danish twins and rated the perceived age by looking at pictures of the subjects’ faces. The researchers found that perceived age was significantly associated with survival and life span. The research was started in 2001 and completed last year. The findings are published in this month’s British Medical Journal (click here for the full manuscript). We know that factors like smoking and sun […]
I have very deep lines between my eyebrows. These lines are particularly noticeable when I frown. Is Botox a good treatment?
Treatment of frown lines (some people refer to frown lines as “elevens” because the lines sometimes look like the number 11) is a common reason patients come to my office. During the consultation, I analyze the muscle action of the brows and forehead. The muscles that form frown lines are located between the eyebrows and travel along the brows. I inject small amounts of Botox in the muscles that create the frown lines. Botox acts to soften the muscle action […]
I am considering lower eyelid surgery for bags under my eyes. However, I am interested in learning about non-surgical options.
Lower eyelid surgery, also known as lower blepharoplasty, is an excellent procedure for the treatment of fullness of the lower lids, hollowness between the lower lids and cheek region, and excess skin of the lower lids. For a full description of the surgical procedure, click here. At times, individuals present to my office with an interest in addressing lower eyelid fullness and hollowness between the lower lids and cheek region but are interested in a procedure with little to no downtime. For those […]
I had an upper eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) performed in the past by another surgeon. I am concerned with a sunken appearance to the upper lid region. What, if any, options are there to correct this issue?
The most common reason for someone to seek out upper eyelid surgery (lift and/or blepharoplasty) is to treat excess skin of the upper lid that results in hooding of the upper eyelid. For patients with hooding of the upper eyelid skin, a blepharoplasty is performed to remove the excess skin. Traditionally, fat is removed from the upper eyelid as well. This surgery, when performed correctly, […]
I am Persian and interested in rhinoplasty. However, I want a result that fits my face and culture. Do you perform ethnic rhinoplasty?
Yes. This is an interesting question as this was a significant topic of discussion at our American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Advances in Rhinoplasty meeting in Seattle this year. I perform many rhinoplasty procedures on Middle Eastern, Persian, Armenian and Hispanic patients. We perform maneuvers in surgery to provide a natural result while maintaining one’s ethnicity and culture. The reason this topic is a fascination is because we are seeing blends of ethnicities, facial appearances […]
I have a crooked and long nose, how will a rhinoplasty help repair this? Afterward, will my nose look different from the front and the side?
If your nose is crooked, one potential benefit from rhinoplasty is the appearance of a straighter nose from the front. If the nose is long, it may appear long because the nasal tip is pointed downwards and/or is over-projected. There are many techniques I use to make a nose appear shorter on side view and frontal view. However, any of these changes in appearance must take your gender, ethnicity, and overall facial features in consideration. […]
