I’ve read where rhinoplasty is different for patients of different ethnicities. How is this so for Jewish people?
A Jewish nose may have a hump along the bridge. This hump is usually bony and cartilaginous in nature. Refinement of the bridge of the nose by trimming down the bony and cartilaginous hump may be of benefit. With respect to ethnic rhinoplasty, I shave the hump along the bridge of the nose without over-resecting it and/or giving an “overdone” look, thus maintaining your ethnicity.

HomeGeneral I’m African American and I had a nose job 3 years ago to narrow my tip and make my nostrils less flared. I initially like my results but now I feel like the tip has become bulbous. What would make this happen after so many years and what can be done to fix it?
One potential cause for bulbous appearance of the nose is the development of scar tissue at the nasal tip. This does not occur right away, but rather may develop over time. Sometimes injection of steroid may be of benefit. You may wish to consider consulting with […]
HomeGeneral I’m a little over two weeks post op from ethnic rhinoplasty to increase definition in my tip and reduce the alar base. I know it’s early, but my tip now droops. Does this mean that I’ll need a revision procedure?
Not necessarily. It is early in the healing process after rhinoplasty. You may wish to discuss this concern with your original surgeon. There may be increased swelling at the nasal tip which will resolve with time. As well, taping of the nose may be of benefit during this period to facilitate the healing process. In my experience, I use a […]
HomeGeneral I’m Hispanic. I had a nose job 7 weeks ago. One side of my nose is much thicker than the other making it look very uneven. I’ve been told that Hispanics have very thick skin. Is this to blame or is it swelling? What are the chances that the symmetry will improve?
I recommend you consult with your original surgeon. Since you had surgery 7 weeks ago, you still have swelling of the tissues. Swelling may be asymmetric. As the swelling resolves, the asymmetry may resolve. There are several options to help minimize the swelling, such as injection of steorid […]
HomeGeneral I’ve heard that the best way to add definition to the nasal tip in Asian patients is with a rib graft or L-shaped implant. Is this true?
Lack of definition of nasal tip in Asian patients may be related to thick nasal skin and/or poorly defined nasal tip cartilages. There are a variety of methods to achieve definition to the nasal tip in Asian patients. One option is suture techniques to achieve refinement of your own nasal tip cartilages. If this proves to be ineffective in achieving refinement, then tip grafts may be considered. Tip grafts can be formed from […]
HomeGeneral I’m Asian with a pretty straight bridge but a very bulbous tip with a wide base and large nostrils. I was never that unhappy with my nose but I’ve become increasingly so as I’ve gotten older. Can these problems be fixed?
A wide nasal base and large nostrils can be addressed with narrowing procedures. These narrowing procedures can reduce the nostril flare. This is performed through well concealed incisions placed near the groove between the face and the nostril. A bulbous nasal tip in an Asian patient can be refined through a variety of methods, including suture techniques for your […]

Is ethnic rhinoplasty a specialty like revision rhinoplasty is?
In ethnic rhinoplasty, the patient and the surgeon discuss the patient’s desires in the context of their ethnicity. Sometimes, ethnic and revision rhinoplasty blend together. For example, a Middle Eastern patient may have had rhinoplasty performed in the past with resultant nasal obstruction and an “overdone” appearance…scooped out bridge and over-turned nasal tip with sharp edges to the nasal tip. This type of patient typically requests a revision procedure to achieve a nose that works (improve nasal obstruction) and achieve a more natural result that is in harmony with the ethnicity.

HomeGeneral I had a fractionated laser resurfacing last week and have some areas of persistent redness. Is this normal?
It is not unusual to have redness of skin following a fractionated laser resurfacing. One week after the procedure, I may recommend a steroid cream to use for 2-3 weeks to help minimize the redness. One month after laser resurfacing, I usually place patients on a vitamin C serum, such as ProHeal by IS Clinical, to help minimize redness. As well, I usually place patients on a retinol to work synergistically with the effects of the laser treatment to further enhance the […]
HomeGeneral I have a Jewish nose and am searching for a surgeon to correct the trademark bump in my profile. What should I look for in a surgeon?
You should look for a surgeon who performs rhinoplasty (surgery of the nose) on a regular basis. This surgeon should also appreciate the function of the nose and address any potential sources for nasal obstruction, such as enlarged turbinates, deviated nasal septum, and/or internal nasal valve stenosis. Board certification in Otolaryngology, Facial Plastic Surgery, and/or Plastic Surgery is important. Finally, you should feel a connection with the surgeon that demonstrates an understanding between […]

Is non-surgical rhinoplasty with fillers an option to even out a Jewish nose?
You are referring to a nose that has a bump along the bridge of the nose. That bump is usually a combination of bone and cartilage. I use a very elegant surgical instrument designed to shave this bump with less trauma than more conventional methods. Non-surgical option with filler injections to the bridge of the nose to camouflage the bump may make the nose look bigger, which might not be in your best interest.
