What is an Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is a cosmetic procedure performed to improve the shape and position of the ears. It is an ideal option for patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their ears. Dr. Batniji often performs otoplasty on patients in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills to correct congenital malformations and injuries.

Good Candidates for an Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is appropriate for individuals who are physically healthy and have reasonable expectations for improving prominent ears.

While otoplasty is commonly performed on adults, it can be performed as early as age five. There are many benefits to performing the procedure at an early age.

First, the ear cartilage is generally more pliable in younger individuals, which may allow for less aggressive surgical techniques. Second, correcting protruding or prominent ears early can spare children the social stigma they might otherwise face at school.

What Are the Benefits of an Otoplasty?

Otoplasty improves the position and shape of the ears, bringing them closer to the head, refining irregular cartilage folds, and restoring proportion between the ears and facial features.

Since incisions are well-concealed and cartilage is reshaped rather than removed, the results appear natural and stable over time.

What’s the First Step?

The first step is a consultation with Dr. Batniji at his Newport Beach or Beverly Hills office. During this visit, he evaluates ear shape, cartilage structure, symmetry, and skin quality, and discusses aesthetic concerns and expectations.

Your surgical plan will be created based on anatomy and desired outcomes. Patients will also receive detailed information during this time regarding preparation, recovery, and anticipated results.

A Breakdown of Otoplasty Surgery

There are several techniques and philosophies regarding otoplasty, and each surgery is tailored to the individual patient. In general, the surgery may involve removing excess skin and reshaping the ears.

Dr. Batniji generally emphasizes cartilage-sparing techniques. Prominent ears are commonly caused by conchal excess or protrusion, in which case Dr. Batniji will perform a conchal setback by setting back the bowl-shaped cartilage of the ear with suturing techniques. If necessary, small amounts of excess cartilage may be removed to ensure proper positioning.

In some cases, the antihelix, or outer rim of the ear, may require repositioning. Dr. Batniji uses cartilage-sparing techniques, placing special sutures called Mustarde sutures to create a natural curve for the outer ear.

What Should I Expect Immediately After the Surgery?

Swelling, bruising, and discomfort may occur after otoplasty surgery and can be managed with medication. A dressing is applied to the ears after surgery, and pediatric patients must wear it for 1 week. After this, it will be replaced by a sports headband worn day and night for an additional two weeks, then worn at night only for two more weeks.

Within one week after surgery, patients are often well enough to return to work or school. However, any activity that could cause accidental trauma to the ear should be avoided for a month or longer.

Your Guide to Post-Otoplasty Care

What Post-Care Regimen Should I Follow?

Patients should avoid any activity that places pressure or tension on the ears, including wearing tight hats, headphones, or helmets, until cleared by Dr. Batniji.

Only gentle cleansing is recommended near the surgical area, and products containing fragrance, alcohol, or exfoliating ingredients should be avoided to prevent irritation. Patients should also avoid hot showers, saunas, or steam rooms, as they can increase inflammation.

Smoking and nicotine use should be avoided as well, as they impair circulation and slow tissue healing.

How Much Does an Otoplasty Cost in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills, CA?

The cost of otoplasty in Beverly Hills and Newport Beach varies depending on surgical complexity, anesthesia requirements, and whether one or both ears are treated. Pediatric and adult cases may differ in approach and operating time.

A detailed cost estimate is provided during consultation after a personalized treatment plan is established.
