How do you fix fat nostrils?

HomeArticles I have what I think of as fat nostrils. Maybe this is because I’m Middle Eastern. How do you fix this with nose surgery? During rhinoplasty, we can perform nostril narrowing procedures. Well-designed incisions placed in specific areas can address a wide or fat nostril to narrow the nostril. For example, a flared nostril is narrowed by trimming excess nostril through an incision placed near or in the crease between the nostril and face. I have a low nasal bridge, how do you fix it?

HomeArticles I have a low nasal bridge. I’m Asian. Would this require breaking the nose to fix it? Not necessarily. A low nasal bridge can be augmented with a variety of techniques. One technique is non-surgical and involves injectable filler, such as hyaluronic acid (Juvederm) or calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse). A longer lasting procedure is surgical (rhinoplasty) and involves placement of cartilage and/or fascia to augment the dorsum. That cartilage is obtained from either the ear, the septum or the rib. The fascia that is obtained is temporalis fascia. For before and after photos of Dr. Batniji’s Newport Beach rhinoplasty procedure, click […]

My Korean nose has a bulbous tip with a low but wide bridge

HomeArticles I’m Korean and I have a bulbous nasal tip with a low but wide bridge. I understand that this will require some type of implant. What is the best implant to use, goretex, silicone or my own cartilage? I prefer to use your own cartilage. The source of that cartilage may be the nasal septum, the ear, or the rib. I prefer your own cartilage over silicone because of the potential for infection of that silicone, potential for erosion of the skin overlying the silicone implant, and/or shifting of that implant. […]

How is a Jewish nose job different?

HomeArticles I’ve read where rhinoplasty is different for patients of different ethnicities. How is this so for Jewish people? A Jewish nose may have a hump along the bridge. This hump is usually bony and cartilaginous in nature. Refinement of the bridge of the nose by trimming down the bony and cartilaginous hump may be of benefit. With respect to ethnic rhinoplasty, I shave the hump along the bridge of the nose without over-resecting it and/or giving an “overdone” look, thus maintaining your ethnicity. […]

The tip of my nose is bulbous after my African American rhinoplasty

HomeArticles I’m African American and I had a nose job 3 years ago to narrow my tip and make my nostrils less flared. I initially like my results but now I feel like the tip has become bulbous. What would make this happen after so many years and what can be done to fix it? One potential cause for bulbous appearance of the nose is the development of scar tissue at the nasal tip. This does not occur right away, but rather may develop over time. Sometimes injection of steroid may be of benefit. You may wish to consider consulting with […]

Drooping nose after my ethnic rhinoplasty

HomeArticles I’m a little over two weeks post op from ethnic rhinoplasty to increase definition in my tip and reduce the alar base. I know it’s early, but my tip now droops. Does this mean that I’ll need a revision procedure? Not necessarily. It is early in the healing process after rhinoplasty. You may wish to discuss this concern with your original surgeon. There may be increased swelling at the nasal tip which will resolve with time. As well, taping of the nose may be of benefit during this period to facilitate the healing process. In my experience, I use a […]

Asymmetry following a rhinoplasty

HomeArticles I’m Hispanic. I had a nose job 7 weeks ago. One side of my nose is much thicker than the other making it look very uneven. I’ve been told that Hispanics have very thick skin. Is this to blame or is it swelling? What are the chances that the symmetry will improve? I recommend you consult with your original surgeon. Since you had surgery 7 weeks ago, you still have swelling of the tissues. Swelling may be asymmetric. As the swelling resolves, the asymmetry may resolve. There are several options to help minimize the swelling, such as injection of steorid […]

Adding definition to Asian nose tip

HomeArticles I’ve heard that the best way to add definition to the nasal tip in Asian patients is with a rib graft or L-shaped implant. Is this true? Lack of definition of nasal tip in Asian patients may be related to thick nasal skin and/or poorly defined nasal tip cartilages. There are a variety of methods to achieve definition to the nasal tip in Asian patients. One option is suture techniques to achieve refinement of your own nasal tip cartilages. If this proves to be ineffective in achieving refinement, then tip grafts may be considered. Tip grafts can be formed from […]

Asian nose with a bulbous tip and nostrils

HomeArticles I’m Asian with a pretty straight bridge but a very bulbous tip with a wide base and large nostrils. I was never that unhappy with my nose but I’ve become increasingly so as I’ve gotten older. Can these problems be fixed? A wide nasal base and large nostrils can be addressed with narrowing procedures. These narrowing procedures can reduce the nostril flare. This is performed through well concealed incisions placed near the groove between the face and the nostril. A bulbous nasal tip in an Asian patient can be refined through a variety of methods, including suture techniques for your […]

Ethnic rhinoplasty specialist

HomeArticles Is ethnic rhinoplasty a specialty like revision rhinoplasty is? In ethnic rhinoplasty, the patient and the surgeon discuss the patient’s desires in the context of their ethnicity. Sometimes, ethnic and revision rhinoplasty blend together. For example, a Middle Eastern patient may have had rhinoplasty performed in the past with resultant nasal obstruction and an “overdone” appearance…scooped out bridge and over-turned nasal tip with sharp edges to the nasal tip. This type of patient typically requests a revision procedure to achieve a nose that works (improve nasal obstruction) and achieve a more natural result that is in harmony with the ethnicity. […]
