Frequently Asked Questions

What Does a Facial Plastic Surgeon Do?

A facial plastic surgeon improves the aesthetics of patients’ faces through both surgical and non-surgical techniques. It takes many years of intense study and training to become a licensed and board-certified facial plastic surgeon such as Dr. Batniji.

As one of the best facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Batniji purposefully limits himself to surgery on the face and neck. This focus allows him to dedicate more time and study to his area of specialization. Other plastic surgeons may perform procedures on the abdomen, upper arms, etc., but Dr. Batniji works exclusively with the face and neck. Some of the most popular treatments he offers include facelifts, rhinoplasties (nose jobs), and blepharoplasties (eyelid surgery).

Dr. Batniji is also a facial reconstructive surgeon, helping patients with facial trauma, genetic defects, and diseases—such as skin cancer—that have affected their facial appearance. Facial reconstructive surgery is concerned with restoring normal function and look.

In addition to surgical interventions, Dr. Batniji also offers non-surgical treatments such as Botox and dermal filler injections. These treatments can be extremely helpful for patients with mild cosmetic concerns or those who wish to avoid surgery.

How Much Does Facial Plastic Surgery Cost?

The cost of facial plastic surgery varies widely according to the exact surgery and each individual patient. For example, a blepharoplasty (repair of drooping eyelids) is generally less expensive than a facelift. However, every patient is unique, and specific medical situations and potential complications factor into the cost.

While medical insurance may often cover some of the cost of reconstructive surgery, it does not cover cosmetic surgery. Please feel free to speak to our office about payment options.

What Is the Best Age to Have a Facelift?

The best age to have a facelift is the age that’s right for you. If this sounds confusing, it’s because everyone ages differently. For example, a person in their fifties may naturally appear to be in their thirties and vice versa.

Most people begin to show signs of aging in their thirties, which intensify in the following decades. Dr. Batniji can help guide you in the decision-making process and let you know when you can gain the most benefits from a facelift while still maintaining a natural appearance.

Is a Deep Plane Facelift Better?

A rhytidectomy, better known as a facelift, is a popular cosmetic surgical procedure that can “turn back the clock” and give you a more youthful look. For many decades, the SMAS facelift was the go-to procedure for surgical rejuvenation.

Today, surgeons frequently use the deep plane facelift in place of the SMAS. It’s not so much that the deep plane technique is better, but it produces superior results in certain cases. For instance, patients with deep wrinkles or who need a dramatic improvement in the cheek areas may benefit from a deep plane facelift rather than a SMAS procedure.

Dr. Batniji and his team are here to walk you through the entire facelift process. They’ll explain the different techniques, lay out all your options, and help you make the best choice.

Will My Face Be Numb After a Facelift?

You may have areas of facial numbness after a facelift. However, this numbness is not permanent in the majority of cases. Most patients have their numbness resolve within three to six months after a facelift, although it may take up to a year for the numbness to dissipate entirely.

Is Blepharoplasty Major Surgery?

Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery. An upper blepharoplasty can repair droopy eyelids that limit your field of vision or simply make you appear older. Lower blepharoplasty is useful for resolving bags beneath the eyes.

Any surgical procedure carries risks. However, blepharoplasty is not surgery on the eyes themselves. Also, blepharoplasty is almost always done on an outpatient basis, meaning no hospital stay is necessary. Blepharoplasty can be performed on one eyelid at a time or on both eyelids simultaneously.

What Exactly Does Botox Do?

Botox is the brand name of botulinum toxin, derived from bacteria. It acts as a neuromodulator, blocking nerve impulses. Specifically, Botox blocks the nerve impulses that signal muscles to contract.

When you receive Botox injections, certain muscles in your face will relax. Contractions of these muscles are responsible for many dynamic facial lines and wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles result from repetitive facial movements, such as smiling or squinting. Botox can be beneficial for diminishing crow’s feet (wrinkles near the eyes), forehead wrinkles, and wrinkles around the mouth.

Keep in mind that the maximum results from Botox will not appear immediately. It takes approximately three to five days to see the most benefit. Your results will likely last around three to six months after your injections. However, repeat treatments are an option for the majority of patients.

How Do You Take Good Care of Your Skin?

Taking care of your skin can be simple. First and foremost, protect your skin from the sun by using sunblock with a high SPF and limiting exposure. Also, use a dermatologist-recommended moisturizer daily. Finally, have a yearly skin check from your dermatologist, and visit them at the first sign of any skin trouble.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

As you might expect, the cost of Botox depends on how much you need. Botox is typically priced by the unit. A rough estimate of the average amount of Botox used during a single treatment is approximately 30 units. Of course, this number can deviate significantly based on the number and severity of your wrinkles.

Which Is Better, Botox or Juvederm?

Botox and Juvederm may seem identical at first glance. After all, they are both injectables certified and approved by the FDA. However, these two products have different applications and work diversely.

Botox relaxes muscles and is ideal for dynamic wrinkles formed from repeated facial movements. Juvederm, on the other hand, is a dermal filler. It does not act on muscles. Rather, Juvederm fills in deeper lines and static wrinkles, or wrinkles produced by diminished collagen and elastin, two crucial skin proteins.

Juvederm’s results generally last longer than those from Botox. You’ll be able to notice the improvement in lines and wrinkles from Juvederm anywhere from about nine to 18 months. Botox treatments begin to lose effectiveness at three to six months after injection.

One product isn’t really better than the other. Botox is more appropriate in certain situations, as is Juvederm. It can be difficult to know which is best in your case, but Dr. Batniji and his team are here to help you make the right choice.
