Botox overview

Why Dr. Batniji prefers Botox at his office in Newport Beach

Botox Cosmetic is an injectable neuromodulator that temporarily weakens and relaxes the muscles on the face, thus smoothing the overlying skin and improving facial creases and lines.

Botox is different from injectable fillers like collagen and fat transfer because rather than filling in skin depressions and wrinkles, Botox actually weakens the underlying muscles responsible for facial lines. The result is a natural, younger, more relaxed appearance.

At Batniji Facial Plastic Surgery of Newport Beach, California, we freshly prepare each formulation of Botox Cosmetic individually for the patient on the day of their injection.

Dr. Batniji or our highly-skilled nurse practitioners, Ashley Lankford and Charlotte Bader will perform the treatment, carefully injecting the material into precise areas to allow for the best possible result. They ensure the patient’s comfort by using prescription-strength topical anesthetics and the smallest possible needles. Results are temporary, with repeat injections needed after three to six months in order to maintain the wrinkle-smoothing effect.

The specific risks and suitability of Botox Cosmetic for any given patient can be determined only at the time of your consultation with Newport Beach plastic surgeon Dr. Batniji. Though all procedures carry some degree of risk, major complications are generally rare.

How does Botox work?

The brain normally sends electrical messages to the muscles, which tell them to contract and produce movement. Over time, these repetitive movements can cause creases or wrinkles in the skin like frown lines. Botox prevents the muscle from receiving these messages which in turn causes the muscle to relax and smoothes the skin wrinkle.

Where does the Botox treatment take place?

Dr. Batniji performs Botox injections in the office setting at Batniji Facial Plastic Surgery of Newport Beach. In order to maximize the patient’s comfort, a very fine needle is used. Any discomfort that patients do experience during the injection is usually very minor and temporary.

What to expect during the procedure

To get rid of your crow’s feet, the procedure will require several injections around the bottom and sides of your eye at the location of the wrinkles. A skilled surgeon, such as Dr. Batniji, will be able to minimize the redness, swelling, or pain brought on by these injections. Keep in mind that crow’s feet are quite small and only cover a tiny section around your eyes, so the procedure itself takes only a few minutes.

Additionally, the recovery time is also very short. You shouldn’t experience any pain or soreness, and you can apply makeup or other cosmetics to cover any redness. However, make sure not to touch the affected area too much, as you could move the medications around.

Because the appointment is so short, regarding crow’s feet, many patients choose to combine it with other treatments. This can include Botox for the forehead, Botox for migraines, jaw Botox, and other forms of Botox.

When is a good time to start wrinkle relaxing?

The optimal time to start wrinkle relaxing treatments is sometime around your late 20s to early 30s. One interesting fact is that around age 20, a person produces about 1% less collagen in the skin each year. This being the reason why around the time we hit our 30s, we start to notice subtle changes in our skin such as loss of elasticity and tone. Currently, there are 4 different neuromodulators that are FDA-approved for treating wrinkles on the market: Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport, Xeomin. This beauty opted for Botox injections. What areas can be treated with Botox?

Botox is effective in treating dynamic wrinkles, or those which are caused by the repeat muscle contraction associated with certain facial expressions. These include forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet and smile or laugh lines. Botox can also improve banding in the neck. There are also some popular uses for jaw Botox.

What else can Botox do?

Aside from getting rid of unwanted facial wrinkles and preventing future ones from appearing, Botox is also useful in other areas. Because Botox intercepts messages between the brain and various parts of the body, it can help with cosmetic, medical, or physical conditions.

Cervical Dystonia

Cervical dystonia is a painful medical condition where the muscles in your neck twitch for no reason. The result is that your head often gets put into painful positions that are unnatural and uncomfortable. Botox can keep your neck from twitching by intercepting the messages that your brain is unintentionally sending.

Lazy Eye or Eye Twitches

Whether you have a lazy eye or a bothersome eye twitch, the reason is usually because of a muscle imbalance. Botox injections will help balance out the muscles in your eye and keep it from twitching or drifting.

Muscle Contractions

Certain conditions, such as cerebral palsy, cause muscle contractions that contort or put pressure on various parts of your body. Botox injections could potentially relax these muscles and keep them from contracting.

Migraines

One of the most recent innovations about Botox is that it’s been shown to reduce the severity and frequency of chronic migraines.

Urinary Incontinence

In the same way that Botox relaxes muscles to keep them from contracting, it can also relax an overactive bladder and help with urinary incontinence.

How soon after treatment with Botox will I see improvement?

The wrinkle-smoothing effects of Botox can typically be seen within a few days of treatment, though it takes approximately two weeks for the maximum benefit to be achieved.

How long do the results of Botox last?

Botox temporarily improves the appearance of wrinkles. On average, results last three to six months. Patients will notice the improvement gradually fading and at this time they may choose to make a follow-up appointment with Dr. Batniji. if you look at the before and after case above. These results are from two weeks after receiving treatment.

How often can I receive Botox injections?

Two-to-three yearly treatments are typically needed in order to maintain the effects of Botox. Botox has been safely used around the world for more than twenty years and treatment may be repeated indefinitely.

Can Botox be used as a replacement for surgery?

Botox does not provide permanent results and, as such, is not a replacement for surgery. However, Botox can provide a good alternative to surgery and can be used repeatedly. Botox is also a good way to preview the results of more permanent procedures like Newport Beach facelifts, eyelid lift, forehead lift, laser resurfacing, chemical peel and dermabrasion before committing to them.

What risks are associated with Botox?

Botox is a very safe treatment with few risks and complications. However, Botox should not be used in individuals who are pregnant or nursing. It should also not be combined with certain medications. Certain antibiotics, for instance, may increase the effect of Botox. For this reason, it’s important to tell Dr. Batniji about any and all medications that you are currently taking. Botox also contains proteins that may trigger an immune response by your body. If this occurs, you may build up a tolerance to Botox and not be able to achieve the same results.

Botox Frequently Asked Questions

Is Anesthesia Required for My Procedure?

Almost all forms of plastic surgery, including facelifts, rhinoplasty, and similar procedures, can be done with local anesthesia rather than general anesthesia. Botox certainly doesn’t require general anesthesia, and the procedure is usually quick and relatively painless.

Will People Be Able to Tell I Had a Procedure?

It depends on the contrast between your appearance before and after the surgery. Dr. Batniji is one of the best in the business, and, for minor procedures, there will be little to no evidence that you had plastic surgery or Botox. On the other hand, major procedures are typically performed so that people notice the difference.

Do I Need to Be Over 40 to Get Botox?

Many of the problems that Botox repairs, such as wrinkles, are a direct result of age. While you can start receiving Botox at any time after the age of 18, it may become more necessary as you get older.

Is Botox Only for Women?

Botox is for anyone and everyone who needs or wants it. Botox injections will have the same corrective effects on the skin and wrinkles of men as it does on women. In fact, men struggle with crow’s feet, wrinkle lines, and skin creases just as much as women.

How Soon Can I Return to Work After Botox?

Many people who receive Botox return to work the same day. This is especially the case for small injections like the ones for crow’s feet.

How Soon Can I Return to Work After Surgery?

How soon you can return to work after surgery depends entirely on the procedure. In most cases, you can return to work within five to ten days of the operation. However, the recovery must not be rushed to give your body time to heal.

How Long Do Procedures Take?

For minor procedures like Botox, the procedure takes anywhere from several minutes to half an hour. For surgeries and more invasive procedures, the surgery can take several hours.

Will Insurance Cover My Procedure?

It depends on the type of surgery you’re receiving and whether it’s considered elective. Because most plastic surgeries are your choice and aren’t a life-or-death situation, most insurance companies don’t cover it. Your insurance may cover your operation if it is done as part of a medical treatment or prevention plan.

Will I Have Scars?

There is no scarring with Botox. The entire process is limited to tiny injections.
