Over time, the neck begins to age resulting in lipodystrophy, platysmal bands (lateral and medial), and nasolabial jowls that extend into the neck. There are a variety of procedures able to rejuvenate the neck to restore a more youthful appearance and firmer contour. These include the use of Botox, neck liposuction, cervical lipectomy, submentoplasty, and necklift surgery. Dr. Batniji has extensive knowledge of the neck anatomy and the many different techniques available and is able to rejuvenate the neck to provide beautiful, natural, long-lasting results.
Neck rejuvenation procedures are appropriate for healthy men and women who have reasonable expectations for improving an aging neck. Individuals with excess fat without sagging skin may be candidates for neck liposuction alone, whereas those with both excess fat and sagging skin may be candidates for a necklift. If jowls are present or if the patients is seeking more definition in the jawline, a facelift may be most appropriate.
Dr. Batniji is located in Newport Beach California. He is affiliated with numerous accredited surgery centers and hospitals throughout Southern California, including the Newport Beach Surgery Center and Hoag Hospital. Surgical times for neck rejuvenation procedures will depend on the technique used but may range anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours. Intravenous sedation with local anesthesia or general anesthesia may be used.
Also known as platysmaplasty, the necklift is a procedure which tightens the neck muscle to restore a more youthful neck contour. The necklift can provide more lasting treatment of the vertical neck bands caused by the platysma muscle while also treating skin laxity in the neck.
The recovery after neck rejuvenation procedures will vary according to the particular technique used. Some degree of swelling and bruising may result, and any discomfort that you experience can be treated with medication. Any dressings applied to the neck are removed the next day then replaced by another dressing that is worn for approximately one week. Drains may be used to collect fluid if necessary. Stitches are removed after one week, at which time you will be shown how to apply special makeup to camouflage any bruising or discoloration that remains. Within seven to ten days, you should feel well enough to resume work and most non-strenuous activities, though you will be advised to postpone exercise and strenuous activities for at least three to four weeks.
Botox injections can be used to temporarily improve the appearance of vertical bands in the neck. These bands are caused by the platysma neck muscle and Botox works by reducing the activity of this muscle. The procedure is a simple, quick one that is performed in Dr. Batniji's office and there is no downtime. However, Botox cannot improve excess skin or fullness in the neck and results last an average of three to four months.
Liposuction can be performed in the neck area to improve fullness resulting from excess tissue. This may be a result of heredity or age. The result is a more sculpted, better defined neck contour. Liposuction of the neck can be performed separately or in conjunction with other procedures. For instance, it is commonly combined with the necklift, facelift and rhinoplasty.
For those with an excess of fatty tissue in the central region of the neck, cervical lipectomy is ideal. A small incision is made just beneath the neck. Cervical lipectomy is often performed with neck liposuction or with platysmaplasty.
Submentoplasty is appropriate for treating a limited amount of skin laxity in the neck. It incorporates neck liposuction, cervical lipectomy and platysmaplasty and is performed with a well-concealed T-shaped incision beneath the chin.
