Question:

Do you ever perform necklifts on men? What sort of results do they get?

Answer:

Yes, we do perform necklift surgery on men. Men who seek out necklift usually have fullness underneath the chin due to excess fatty tissue as well as neck muscle bands. As well, they have excess skin. Typically, I perform neck liposuction as part of the necklift to further refine the neckline. I treat the neck muscle to further refine the neckline. The incisions for necklift are well hidden behind the ear. Following surgery, I have patients wear a neck wrap for 1 week to allow the skin to re-drape onto the newly sculpted neck tissues.

Question:

I have a wrinkled neck with folds of loose skin. I think a neck lift would help me tremendously. Where are the incisions located for this? How long does complete recovery take? I am 61 and in excellent health.

Answer:

Based on your description of wrinkled neck skin with folds and loose skin, I agree that a necklift might be a good option for you. The incisions are located behind the ear. Occasionally, I place another incision underneath the chin to address muscle bands, excess skin, and/or excess fat in underneath the chin. It takes approximately 1-2 weeks for bruising and swelling to resolve.

Question:

I'm 58 and I feel that I look pretty good for my age; everyone always thinks that I'm younger. However, over the past year or so, my neck has begun to get really saggy. What are my options for improving the contour of my neck?

Answer:

You have a few options to address your concerns for the contour of your neck. Non-invasive options include technologies that are designed to tighten skin. These include lasers, radiofrequency, and ultrasound. These modalities usually require a series of treatments, and may also need maintenance treatments after your series of treatments. If you have excess fat underneath the excess skin, then liposuction may benefit you to achieve a more youthful contour of the neck. If there are muscle bands in the neck that cause further sagging of the neck, then I perform a procedure through a small incision to tighten these muscles; this is referred to as platysmaplasty and/or submentoplasty. Finally, if there is excess skin, you would benefit from a necklift; this procedure is performed through well hidden incisions behind the ear to tighten the platysma neck muscle and skin to achieve a more youthful neck contour.

Question:

The males in my family have a genetic "turkey neck" that gets progressively worse with age. Could a neck lift permanently fix this hereditary problem?

Answer:

A necklift is designed to address excess fat in the neck, neck muscle bands, and neck skin laxity. This surgery is a good option for treating the "turkey neck." Through this procedure, I am able to perform neck liposuction, tighten the neck muscles, and tighten the skin of the neck to achieve a more youthful neck contour. The incisions are well hidden behind the ear and underneath the chin.

Question:

I will be getting a neck lift. I am worried about the bruising and swelling afterwards. Will the swelling make it feel like it is difficult to breathe? Will there be any numbness in the area?

Answer:

In order to minimize bruising after surgery, I recommend you avoid aspirin and ibuprofen-containing products 2 weeks prior to surgery. As well, there are a variety of herbal/homeopathic medicine that increase bruising and swelling. These should be avoided 2 weeks prior to surgery. High blood pressure increases risk of bruising and swelling. Head of bed elevation after surgery decreases bruising and swelling. Arnica Montana, a homeopathic medication, may decrease bruising and swelling. Following necklift, if one experiences swelling, it usually does not make it difficult to breathe. There usually is numbness of the skin of the neck following necklift; this is normal and typically resolves within weeks after surgery.

Question:

I had a mini, smas neck and face lift and lip enhancement with smas. I do not like my lips.. my smile is not as wide and I can't show my teeth like I use to. Can the material be removed if not satified with the results soon after the initial surgery?

Answer:

Catherine,
Thank you for your inquiry.

The changes you are experiencing may be related to swelling after the procedure. If this is the case, then you may find improvement in the appearance of your smile with time as the swelling subsides.

I prefer to use hyaluronic acid fillers rather than SMAS when performing lip augmentation for a variety of reasons, one of which is the fact that hyaluronic acid fillers are easily reversible with injection of an enzyme, hyaluronidase. That said, if you find the changes in the appearance of your smile persist despite resolution of the swelling, one may consider a surgical procedure to attempt to remove the SMAS from the lip.

Question:

I think I need a neck lift. The skin hangs down around my neck in folds. Where is the incision and is the neck muscle actually tightened? Can you remove some neck fat at the same time?

Answer:

A neck lift is a surgical procedure. Assuming you are healthy, a neck lift is an excellent option to address your concerns. A small incision is placed underneath the chin; through this incision, neck fat is removed with liposuction. Also, muscle bands can be tightened through this incision. Incisions placed behind the hairline allow further tightening of neck muscles and trimming of excess skin. The tightened neck muscle provides a more youthful neckline and a longer lasting result then tightening skin alone.

Question:

After my necklift, will I be able to take care of myself? I live in an isolated little cottage; do you think I would be better off staying with someone for a couple days after my surgery? I am 67 years old.

Answer:

I recommend you stay with someone for a couple days after your surgery. If you wish, we can make arrangements for you to stay in a recovery suite with a registered nurse during the first few days after your procedure.

Question:

I have redness of the neck and was told it is poikiloderma. What is this?

Answer:

Poikiloderma of Civatte is the full name of the condition and is noted as a chronic reddish-brown discoloration of the lateral cheeks and/or neck. The term poikiloderma refers to atrophy of skin, telangectasias within the skin, and skin pigment changes (hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation). It is a benign condition and is most often found in fair-skinned women. There are several potential factors that may cause this condition, including hormonal changes, UV light exposure, and hereditary predisposition. There are several potential treatment options to minimize the appearance of the redness of the skin; these treatment options include intense pulse light, pulsed dye laser, KTP laser, and fractionated lasers.

Question:

I have wrinkling on my neck due to some weight loss. Would laser skin resurfacing improve the condition of the skin?

Answer:

Laser skin resurfacing may result in some tightening of the skin of the neck. There are laser systems that provide skin tightening without down time. These treatment modalities usually require a series of treatments. An example of such treatment is the SkinTyte by Sciton laser. If there is excessive skin following weight loss, you may most benefit from a necklift. A necklift is a surgical procedure with incisions hidden behind the ear to tighten the neck muscles and skin, thus providing a more youthful neckline.
