Neck lift |
Hi. I am 54 years old and would like a neck lift. My 56-year-old sister and I have the same wrinkled neck and she is interested in one as well. How long do the effects of the neck lift generally last? Does the tightened skin continue to wrinkle at the same rate?
A necklift is a procedure to address sagging skin of the neck. Occasionally, neck muscle bands beneath the chin also contribute to the loss of a youthful neck contour; these neck muscle bands are also addressed through a necklift. Additionally, we perform liposuction of the neck during a necklift, as needed. The necklift procedure is performed through a small incision that is very well hidden underneath the chin as well as incisions behind the ear. A recent study suggests the results achieved from such a procedure generally last approximately 7 years. Depending upon the elasticity issues of the neck skin and the quality of collagen in the skin as well as sun damage, the addition of a skin resurfacing or skin tightening procedure approximately 1 year after the surgical procedure may further enhance the results achieved from the necklift. The laser resurfacing procedure we perform is a fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing. The non-invasive skin tightening procedure we perform is Exilis, which is a radiofrequency device designed to heat the deeper layers of skin to achieve improved collagen and thus improved skin tightening. While these procedures do not substitute for the benefits achieved through a necklift procedure, these ancillary procedures may provide additional benefit on a case-by-case basis.
I have a flabby neck and a double chin. Are these things that the neck lift can fix?
I would recommend a neck lift. The first part of the neck lift is performed through an incision underneath the chin. Through this incision, I perform neck liposuction. I then tighten the neck muscle underneath the chin; this is called the platysma muscle. Then, through incisions behind the ear, we re-position the platysma muscle up and back, thus further refining the neck line. The excess skin is trimmed behind the ear. Occasionally, patients who benefit from a neck lift also benefit from a lower facelift to address jowl formation and neck/facial skin laxity. Facelift adds a small, well-hidden incision along the contours of the ear.
I’m from Southern California and I have a large flap of skin the hangs down below my chin. Is a neck lift the only procedure that will eliminate this unwanted skin?
A neck lift is an excellent option for reducing the appearance of excess neck skin. The procedure is performed through an incision underneath the chin and behind the ears. The incision underneath the chin is very well hidden; through this incision, I am able to address excess tissue with liposuction and stitch the neck muscle. Through the incision behind the ear, I am able to pull the neck muscle and anchor it behind the ear; this achieves a more refined neck line.
I'm 39 but I feel like my neck is very saggy prematurely and that this really ages me. The sag started a few years ago when I lost about 40 lbs. Even though I feel pretty young for this, could a neck lift help?
A necklift is an excellent option to address laxity of skin in the neck. The necklift is a surgical procedure performed through incisions behind the ear and occasionally underneath the chin. Through these incisions, we can perform neck liposuction as needed to address excess fat in the neck. We can further tighten the neck muscle to achieve refinement in the neckline. Then, the excess skin can be trimmed.
I've had some work done on my face and it looks great but now my neck looks really wrinkly and saggy in comparison. What sort of procedure addresses problems like this in the neck?
One option is a surgical neck lift. This procedure is designed to address any excess fatty tissue of the neck with neck liposuction, address weakness of the neck muscle and/or bands of muscle in the neck with suture and tightening techniques; redundant skin of the neck can also be trimmed during this procedure. A laser-, ultrasound- or radio frequency-based procedure may address skin laxity of the neck; however, if there is significant wrinkly/saggy skin of the neck, the surgical procedure may provide a more effective, long lasting result.
Do you ever perform necklifts on men? What sort of results do they get?
Yes, we do perform necklift surgery on men. Men who seek out necklift usually have fullness underneath the chin due to excess fatty tissue as well as neck muscle bands. As well, they have excess skin. Typically, I perform neck liposuction as part of the necklift to further refine the neckline. I treat the neck muscle to further refine the neckline. The incisions for necklift are well hidden behind the ear. Following surgery, I have patients wear a neck wrap for 1 week to allow the skin to re-drape onto the newly sculpted neck tissues.
I have a wrinkled neck with folds of loose skin. I think a neck lift would help me tremendously. Where are the incisions located for this? How long does complete recovery take? I am 61 and in excellent health.
Based on your description of wrinkled neck skin with folds and loose skin, I agree that a necklift might be a good option for you. The incisions are located behind the ear. Occasionally, I place another incision underneath the chin to address muscle bands, excess skin, and/or excess fat in underneath the chin. It takes approximately 1-2 weeks for bruising and swelling to resolve.

I'm 58 and I feel that I look pretty good for my age; everyone always thinks that I'm younger. However, over the past year or so, my neck has begun to get really saggy. What are my options for improving the contour of my neck?
You have a few options to address your concerns for the contour of your neck. Non-invasive options include technologies that are designed to tighten skin. These include lasers, radiofrequency, and ultrasound. These modalities usually require a series of treatments, and may also need maintenance treatments after your series of treatments. If you have excess fat underneath the excess skin, then liposuction may benefit you to achieve a more youthful contour of the neck. If there are muscle bands in the neck that cause further sagging of the neck, then I perform a procedure through a small incision to tighten these muscles; this is referred to as platysmaplasty and/or submentoplasty. Finally, if there is excess skin, you would benefit from a necklift; this procedure is performed through well hidden incisions behind the ear to tighten the platysma neck muscle and skin to achieve a more youthful neck contour.

The males in my family have a genetic "turkey neck" that gets progressively worse with age. Could a neck lift permanently fix this hereditary problem?
A necklift is designed to address excess fat in the neck, neck muscle bands, and neck skin laxity. This surgery is a good option for treating the "turkey neck." Through this procedure, I am able to perform neck liposuction, tighten the neck muscles, and tighten the skin of the neck to achieve a more youthful neck contour. The incisions are well hidden behind the ear and underneath the chin.

I will be getting a neck lift. I am worried about the bruising and swelling afterwards. Will the swelling make it feel like it is difficult to breathe? Will there be any numbness in the area?
In order to minimize bruising after surgery, I recommend you avoid aspirin and ibuprofen-containing products 2 weeks prior to surgery. As well, there are a variety of herbal/homeopathic medicine that increase bruising and swelling. These should be avoided 2 weeks prior to surgery. High blood pressure increases risk of bruising and swelling. Head of bed elevation after surgery decreases bruising and swelling. Arnica Montana, a homeopathic medication, may decrease bruising and swelling. Following necklift, if one experiences swelling, it usually does not make it difficult to breathe. There usually is numbness of the skin of the neck following necklift; this is normal and typically resolves within weeks after surgery.
