Question:

I'm Latino and I've never liked my nose. I'd like to get a nose job, but I don't want it too drastic. I know I need to find someone with experience in ethnic noses, but how do I find someone with experience in my specific nose. To Caucasians, Latinos are Latinos, but to us we're all very different and that means we all have different noses too.

Answer:

During the initial consultation, I would like to learn of your desires for rhinoplasty.  Once I have an understanding of your desires, then I perform an analysis of not only the nose but also the face.  Then, based upon your desires, your anatomy, and what I believe can be achieved within the context of your ethnicity, anatomy, and desires, I shall make my recommendations.  We then perform digital imaging to further convey your desires and what I feel is potentially achievable through rhinoplasty.  In this fashion, we are able to respect your ethnicity and desires for rhinoplasty. Question:

I'm African American and I'd like to get a nose job. Is closed rhinoplasty an option for me or do African Americans typically need an open approach?

Answer:

Open or closed approaches depend upon surgeon, the patient, the patient's anatomy, the patient's desires for rhinoplasty, and the maneuvers needed to achieve those desires.  If a patient wishes to achieve refinement of the nasal tip, then an open approach may afford us the exposure needed to perform the procedures to achieve that desired result.  If the patient wishes for changes to the bridge of the nose only (ie. reduction of a bump or augmentation), then a closed approach may be an option. Question:

Is the recovery following rhinoplasty any different for a patient of ethnicity?

Answer:

The recovery following rhinoplasty for a patient of ethnicity is usually the same.  One potential difference is the amount of swelling after surgery and how long the swelling takes to resolve.  The issue of swelling may be impacted by skin thickness.  Those patients of ethnicity may have thicker nasal skin which will result in longer period of swelling and time for that swelling to resolve.  In general, most swelling resolves within the first month of rhinoplasty.  However, it takes approximately 6-12 months for refinement of the nasal tip as the swelling in this region continues to dissipate. Question:

I'm interested in ethnic rhinoplasty to address a hump on my nose. Can I just slightly reduce the hump rather than having it removed altogether?

Answer:

I use an instrument that enables me to shave down the bony hump delicately and accurately. It is different than the traditional rasp or osteotomy. It is an oscillating powered instrument that is smaller in size than traditional instrumentation, thus allowing for more accurate treatment of a bony hump. Cartilage hump is trimmed down with scissors or a scalpel. Digital imaging during the consultation period assists in the dialogue of what your desires are for refinement of the hump and we use those images as a guide in the operating room. Question:

Is ethnic rhinoplasty considered more complex than other rhinoplasty?

Answer:

Rhinoplasty is a complex surgery. When performing an ethnic rhinoplasty, it is important for me to take into consideration the unique characteristics of the patient's ethnicity as well as their desires. These unique characteristics include skin type, facial features, bone and cartilage structure of the nose, among other characteristics. Typically, patients desire a result that is in harmony with their facial features and in the context of their ethnicity. Digital imaging during the consultation further aids us in the discussion of what the patient desires are and what limitations exist within the confines of their anatomy. Question:

I'm half Egyptian and I have a very big beak for a nose. If I were to have a rhinoplasty, do you suggest improving it just a little or drastically changing it?

Answer:

It depends upon your gender and other facial features.  Generally, males should have a stronger bridge of the nose, while women tend to prefer a more elegant, graceful profile.  That said, you may wish to maintain your ethnicity in which case it is best to preserve some of the bridge so that it is in harmony with the remainder of your features.  We perform digital imaging of your profile view during your consultation to better assess your desires and what would provide a natural result that fits your face. For before and after photos of Dr. Batniji’s Newport Beach rhinoplasty procedure, click here.

Question:

I have what I think of as fat nostrils. Maybe this is because I'm Middle Eastern. How do you fix this with nose surgery?

Answer:

During rhinoplasty, we can perform nostril narrowing procedures. Well-designed incisions placed in specific areas can address a wide or fat nostril to narrow the nostril.  For example, a flared nostril is narrowed by trimming excess nostril through an incision placed near or in the crease between the nostril and face.  For before and after photos of Dr. Batniji’s Newport Beach rhinoplasty procedure, click here.

Question:

I have a Jewish nose and am searching for a surgeon to correct the trademark bump in my profile. What should I look for in a surgeon?

Answer:

You should look for a surgeon who performs rhinoplasty (surgery of the nose) on a regular basis. This surgeon should also appreciate the function of the nose and address any potential sources for nasal obstruction, such as enlarged turbinates, deviated nasal septum, and/or internal nasal valve stenosis. Board certification in Otolaryngology, Facial Plastic Surgery, and/or Plastic Surgery is important. Finally, you should feel a connection with the surgeon that demonstrates an understanding between you and the surgeon with respect to your aesthetic goals.

Question:

Is non-surgical rhinoplasty with fillers an option to even out a Jewish nose?

Answer:

You are referring to a nose that has a bump along the bridge of the nose. That bump is usually a combination of bone and cartilage. I use a very elegant surgical instrument designed to shave this bump with less trauma than more conventional methods. Non-surgical option with filler injections to the bridge of the nose to camouflage the bump may make the nose look bigger, which might not be in your best interest.

Question:

For patients of ethnicity who are prone to keloid scarring, is it better to perform rhinoplasty with a closed technique? Is it possible for keloids to form inside of the nose then and would this have any negative impact after surgery?

Answer:

The risk of keloid scar following an open (aka external) rhinoplasty is very rare. During a closed (aka endonasal) rhinoplasty at Batniji Facial Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, all incisions are placed inside the nose, thus further minimizing risk of keloid formation.
